I just got done reading a post of a friends and in her post she was ranting and raving about all of the fabulous things that her and her husband did for Valentine’s Day, she got her hair done, bought a fancy gown, he sent her flowers and took her to a dance.
While I was reading it I was totally 100% jealous! Can you blame me? What girl doesn’t want to be treated like Cinderella? After all I am from the generation of Disney Princess movies, Cinderella, Snow White, etc… prince charming comes in and sweeps you off your feet and you live all happily, and romantically ever after right? And as I was about to post a Valentine’s Day post, I was going to make our day sound so flowery and wonderful too… but truthfully it was just alright. (to be completely honest I have come to HATE any holidays that involve gifts, because I hate the stress, anxiety, expectations, and unmet expectations that come along with them, and yes that includes Christmas, I don’t even really like decorating because I know that I will just have to clean them up in a few weeks anyway)
Don’t get me wrong I am madly and deeply in love with Travis he is my prince charming and takes fabulous care of Malana and me, but he has never been the romantic type. He is more of the T-shirt and jeans go out to eat at a low key restaurant and a movie kind of guy. Which I am happy with 99% of the time, but every once in a while I would like to feel womanly and “fancy”.
And since we are being honest here, I acted like a princess yesterday just not the good kind. I was totally bratty, and jerky to him coming back to those unreal and unmet expectations. He is a procrastinator and likes to wait until the last minute to do things, so I wasn’t happy when V-day came and he still didn’t have anything planned. He had to work all morning and I acted like a total spoiled brat mopeing and whining and just being plain jerky. So when he came home from work with a box of my favorite chocolates, instead of appreciating it I made some snide remark about “thanks for thinking of me” or some such bratty thing. And I was mad that he would spend that much money on something as useless as chocolates. Totally deflated he sat on the couch, plugged in his earphones and started playing X-box. I think that I had steam coming out of my ears at this point but I took a step back and realized what a jerk I was being, after all Valentine’s Day isn’t just for the girl in the relationship. So I bundled up, went to his favorite hometown burger joint and brought it home for lunch, as well as bought some movie tickets for a show that he has been hinting at wanting to see and surprised him with that and his favorite candy bar.
Thankfully he is pretty forgiving and it totally changed his mood (and mine), we salvaged what was left of the night, and that is why it was just okay. But secretly I still hoped for that Cinderella date next year, and most likely we will go through the same exact cycle next year. But after reading the above mentioned post, it made me wonder how blogging has affected our society? Has it encouraged us to be better? Made us more jealous? Reaffirmed our unreal expectations? Are we real in what we write or do we take on some persona that we think people expect from us? What do you think? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

The reality of life is not fancy dresses and getting hair done and going to a dance, it is more like what can we afford and what makes the most sense for our family. We should still try our best to enjoy one another in the moment. I tend to be a bratty princess often. It is a good thing my husband is forgiving and loving. He knew what he was getting into when he married me... or did he?
You should move to Ireland. I don't know if we are just oblivious or living in a missionary world but holidays seem a lot more low key. I suppose the Irish celebration starts and ends in a pub. Yesterday I made fresh rolls-how exciting is that? Today for P-day we went to the Blarney Woolen Mills and bought a jumper (sweater) on the winter clearance. Then we went to the buffet lunch at Pizza Hut. Beat that for romantic!
Pushed send to soon. We had a great time. And the back roads to Blarney are pretty romantic.
You could do like we do - Bryce and I celebrate Valentine's Day the weekend after the 14th. So on actual Valentine's Day I do something for the kids...make cookies or give them a little treat and then the next weekend Bryce and I go out. That way places are less crowded, babysitters are more available, and you can get your chocolates and flowers for half price (or you can get twice as much!)
